It’s time to grab a cup of coffee and stay tuned!

Understanding the Concept of Lip wrinkles

Lip lines are just a fancy way to refer to lip wrinkles – the troublesome folds that appear around the edges of the mouth and upper lips. They tend to extend vertically towards the nose and vary in appearance among different individuals but they have one common feature – everybody wants them to disappear, forever! Though signs of aging usually show up on the entire face, lip lines should not be confused with nasolabial folds, smile lines or frown lines.

Causes of Lip Wrinkles

You’d be amazed to know the long list of causes that result in the formation of lip wrinkles. The process is slow and gradual but they come to notice quite suddenly, leaving you in awe and depression.

1.   Aging:

It’s no wonder that aging is the driving factor for the appearance of lip wrinkles. As the skin ages, two major structural proteins – collagen and elastin – begin to break down. This causes the skin to lose its turgor and integrity. To make matters worse, aging also causes the skin to lose its natural oils thus devoiding it of moisture. A dry skin is more prone to wrinkles and an overall dull appearance.

2.               Prolonged Sun Exposure:

Ultraviolet rays affect the overall texture of the skin which ultimately makes it prone to wrinkles and fine lines.

3.               Poor Dietary Habits:

Lack of fruits and vegetables, suboptimal water consumption, and excessive junk food intake contributes to poor skin health and eventually results in signs of aging.

4.               Lack Of Beauty Sleep:

Without eight hours of nighttime sleep, the facial muscles are unable to relax and they may lose their tone. Flabby muscles are the greatest contributor to lip wrinkles.

5.               Lack Of Exercise:

As much as total body workout is important for the overall health of an individual, it’s the lack of facial exercises that makes the skin prone to signs of aging and wrinkle formation.

6.               Alcohol Consumption:

Alcohol generates free radicals in the body and their toxic effect on the skin is responsible for the formation of wrinkles.

7.               Cigarette Smoking:

You’d be flabbergasted to know that lip wrinkles are also known as smoker’s lines. That’s because smoking accelerates the aging process drastically and enhances the formation of lip wrinkles even at early ages.

Lip Wrinkles Treatments:

As much as it sounds like lip wrinkles are inevitable to avoid, I assure you that they are not only treatable but can be eliminated completely with simple remedies.

1.  Cinnamon Mask:

Mix a few drops of any essential oil to ground cinnamon and make a thick paste. Massage the mixture for fifteen minutes and wash off with lukewarm water. Cinnamon is a wonderful remedial drug that has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. It nourishes and cleanses the skin by increasing blood circulation within all the layers thus curing the wrinkled skin from inside.

2.          Consumption Of Antioxidants:

The dietary modification does a hundred percent job in improving the overall condition of the skin. Foods that are high in antioxidants prevent the free radicals from breaking down collagen and damaging the skin. Not only does it treat the existing lip wrinkles but also prevents their appearance in the future. Thus increase the consumption of berries, avocados, broccoli, carrots, spinach, and pecans in your dietary regime.

3.          Use Of Sunscreen:

Sunscreen and sunglasses are a big savior when it comes to rescuing damaged skin. The ultraviolet rays of the sunlight have damaging properties that break down the skin’s protective barrier and makes the skin prone to lip wrinkles. An SPF 30 sunscreen will do wonders in maintaining the radiance of your skin.

4.          Moisturizing:

Wrinkles are more likely to appear on skin that’s devoid of moisture. A good moisturizer protects the skin from the damaging effects of the environment and keeps the wrinkles at bay. Application of a moisturizer is usually preferred in the morning before your skin is exposed to any pollutant.

5.          Serum:

The market is loaded with wrinkle-fighting serums that you can purchase to get rid of lip wrinkles. A serum is an oil-based solution that penetrates into multiple layers of the skin and rejuvenates the skin texture from within. Regular use of a serum would keep all the ugly wrinkles at bay.

6.          Exfoliation:

While you’re too conscious to make all sorts of exfoliation masks for your face, a little attention should be given to the lip area as well. Scrubbing the lips and surrounding area would remove dead skin and make the wrinkles less noticeable. A sugar and honey scrub is the ideal mixture for exfoliation.

7.          Hydration:

Keeping your facial skin and lips moist is the key to beauty. Applying a good lip balm, massaging the area around the lips with an oil-based product and keeping your water intake optimal are a
few ways to maintain good hydration level.

8.          Honey & Oatmeal Scrub:

Make a thick paste by mixing two tablespoon oatmeal and a little honey. Apply the mixture to your lip area and massage in a circular motion. Both honey and oatmeal are proven remedies for healthy, radiant skin.

9.          Modifying The Lip Postures:

Certain activities like drinking water directly from the water bottle put the additional constraint on the lips and accelerate the formation of wrinkles. Practicing good lip posture is yet another effective way to avoid lip lines.

10.     Pineapple Juice:

Consumption of pineapple juice or application on the wrinkled area in form of the scrub is an effective approach for treating lip lines. Pineapple is naturally enriched with an enzyme called bromelain that has wrinkle reducing properties.

11.     Papaya Mask:

Add a few drops of honey to crushed papaya and massage the mixture into the wrinkled area. Papaya is enriched with carotenoids – substances that protect the skin from ultraviolet light and carcinogenic rays. It is proven to even out the skin complexion and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Therapeutic Approach

When all home remedies fail to show any effect, medicinal science has always given the right answer. Medicinal technology is advancing new peaks with every passing day and with the caliber of treatments that we have today, lip wrinkles are no big deal to cure.

1.  Anti-wrinkle Injections:

Lip wrinkles that are caused by excessive muscle movement can be cured by injecting drugs that block the muscles and make them flaccid. This would eventually make the wrinkle lines to disappear, resulting in the smoother looking skin.

2.          Skin Resurfacing & Rejuvenation:

It’s a non-invasive method to remove dead cells from the upper layers of the skin and promote regeneration of skin cells. By increasing the cell turnover, it restores the texture of the skin and reduces the visibility of lip wrinkles. This approach targets the deep dermal layers of the skin and treats the damage from within. The treatment might take some time but the results are phenomenal.

3.          Injectable Fillers:

This is basically a lip augmentation therapy where temporary dermal fillers are injected into the upper lip. The fillers are made up of synthetic proteins that are similar in structure to the ones produced in our body such as hyaluronic acid fillers. By injecting these fillers, the natural contour and volume of the lips are slightly enhanced which automatically dulls the appearance of lip wrinkles.

4.          Facelift Surgery:

The most long-lasting procedure for wrinkle removal is face-lifting surgery. It aims to tighten the skin and flatten out the ugly creases that form above the upper lip. Although expensive and invasive, the results are excellent and durable.

5.          Botox:

Botox serves to relax the muscles which eventually reduce the appearance of wrinkles. It blocks the nerve signals and makes the muscles flaccid. Results can be enhanced when it’s used in conjunction with the injectable filler.

6.          Laser:

It’s a non-invasive procedure that uses infrared light or radiofrequency waves to flatten and smoothen the wrinkle lines. By sending external energy into the skin, collagen production is enhanced which restores the tautness of the skin.

FACIAL EXERCISES FOR LIP LINES:

Just like anywhere else in your body, facial muscles need a proper workout to stay in shape. Flabby, sagging muscles will eventually lead to the formation of wrinkles – not only around the lips but everywhere on the face. Sparing just twenty minutes of your day for a facial workout can help you get your old, younger-looking skin back.

1.  Place both your index fingers inside the corner of your mouth. Now gently pull outward till you start feeling a stretch around your lips. Keep pulling the fingers outward until you feel the maximum tension in the muscles. Hold this position for three seconds and release the fingers. Repeat the same step at least twenty-five times and then gradually increase the repetitions to fifty.

2.          Lift one side of your lips into a half smile without using your hands. Hold the position for three seconds and then release. The same step has to be repeated on the other side of the lips. Five repetitions on each side are enough if you’re a beginner.

3.          Look into a mirror and open your mouth such that there is a gap of 2 inches between your upper and lower lip. Now bring down the upper lip over your lower lip without making any contact with the teeth. Do five repetitions with each lip.
